Decline in visitors hurt snow sport retail sales

It was a difficult winter for most snow sports-related businesses in the U.S. Lift ticket sales at the nation’s ski areas were off by at least 15 percent, even though Aspen/Snowmass seems to have dodged the bullet with a mere 1.8 decline.

Vail Resorts reports 8.9 percent decline in Colorado skier visits

BROOMFIELD, Colo.—With a scratchy 2011-2012 snow season behind it, Vail Resorts is reporting a 12.6 percent decline in skier visits for its six Colorado and California properties. However, season-to-date lift ticket revenue is down just .3 percent, reflecting new pricing structures.

EAGLE COUNTY, Colo.—While lawyers for American Airlines higher-ups and unions wrangled in U.S. Bankruptcy court in Manhattan this week, and while US Airways talks about a possible takeover, the scene is decidedly less tense at Eagle County Regional Airport, which relies on American for about half its traffic.

VAIL, Colo.—Despite a balmy conclusion to the ski season, during which the third warmest winter in U.S. recorded history came to roost, the Town of Vail managed to post a small gain in sales tax revenue for March.

VAIL, Colo.—While the ski season warmed to a halt this year with diminishing numbers on the hills, the Town of Vail continued to report healthy sales-tax gains through February (March figures will be ready at the end of April). It suggests that destination winter visitors find other ways to spend their time and money beyond lift tickets.

VAIL, Colo.—Rather than delivering a last-minute deluge of snow and visitors, March uncorked a curve ball for Colorado, delivering record warm temperatures, a rapidly vanishing snowpack and dwindling day skiers.
