VAIL, Colo.—It’s a bittersweet time of year. Vail and Beaver Creek’s lifts grind to a close on April 15, but there is always that early-April sensory wonderment that lifts the spirits and reminds us, odd as it sounds, that there are good things that do not require snow and gravity.

Low tide exposes the rocky fingers of land that connect the fort-topped islands to the mainland of St-Malo. Robin Smith photo.

St-Malo is one of those sparkling seaside resorts wildly popular with the French during the height of summer, but for us, its appeal was simple:  its historic “old town” is a walled city.

COCKROACH CAYE, BELIZE —We’re standing near a makeshift Robinson Crusoe shack on Turneffe Atoll, one of the tiny specks of dry land off the shore of Belize, and since it's rare to hear a tropical island-dweller praise hurricanes, Leigh and I listen up when Carlos Miller starts to explain how the periodic storms help sustain the mangrove-coral ecosystem of Cockroach Caye.

Sunday Traveler: Mystical and alluring Mont St. Michel

February 11, 2012, 7:05 pm

Mont-St-Michel  rises “like a mystic mountain of medieval fantasy and delicacy from the strength of the granite rocks which held it secure in the surrounding miles of golden quicksand,”  wrote Helen MacInnes in her 1942 book, ASSIGNMENT IN  BRITTANY. (Photo by Robin Smith)
Mont St. Michel is a rocky islet about one mile off the coast of Normandy in northwest France, with a towering Gothic abbey perched atop.  It is one of those places so distinctive in shape and line, and so frequently photographed, that it seems every other traveler in the world has already been there, done that.

January 21, 2012, 7:09 pm

Enjoying a refreshing dip in the Mayfield River during a hike in an ecopreserve near Mayfield Falls, a popular day trip from Negril.
JAMAICA—When I read some time ago that Negril, a tourist hotspot on the west end of Jamaica, has an ordinance barring any building higher than a palm tree, I filed it away as an interesting ecotourism fact. I was also intrigued when I heard that the funky beach town on the western tip of Jamaica is a hot spot for psychedelic Caribbean sunsets.
